People can be judged for many reasons - whether it be due to their appearance, their taste in music and clothes, their make-up and hair or behaviour.
A topic that is relevant to us all I believe, although we are usually reluctant to admit it, we have all judged somebody we don't know. For me, the phrase 'don't judge a book by its cover' springs to mind, which is something I have attempted not to do ever since Susan Boyle went viral through Britain's Got Talent! Despite my efforts, it is a very difficult thing to stop your brain doing automatically. However, more recently I have tried extremely hard not to be as judgmental towards people that I'm not familiar with - especially since starting Sixth Form.
The problem with assuming things about others is that you don't know their story. For all you know, the person that you have just insulted could be going through an awful period in their lives and you could of just made everything a lot worse for them. Not only that, but there are many other situations such as this that occur every day and the detail of it varies, I'm sure than many of us have been on the rotten end of that ourselves, some worse than others.
I remember back in the start of year 7 at high school when I was first off school, nobody knew the reason that I was absent because neither did me, nor my family at this stage. I understand that at the time we were only eleven years old but my point being that there were numerous rumors floating throughout the year group as to why I was off as well as allegations that I was a 'skiver' and such. This didn't exactly make the situation any easier for me, I always think back and wonder why nobody just asked me what was wrong and how I was feeling...
That is just one example of judging a situation or person that I have thought of and this is also a reason that I'm soon starting a campaign with YoungMindsUK in our region (watch this space!) If you ever find yourself on either sides of this situation then please think before you say something about somebody you know nothing about and, if this happens to you then just remind yourself that you're a better person than they'll ever be and of course, most importantly, smile :-)
