I woke up this morning and heard on the news that a new survey has shown that a third of children have contemplated suicide before the age of 16 and because of these shocking results, the charity has suggested that school's should give lessons on mental health. The report also showed that a majority of these children felt let down by the support that they received, or lack of and due to this the charity BeatBullying have set up an online support service called MindFull which will provide the support needed to children who are suffering with depression, or a condition similar, in the future.
Hearing the statistic found by the charity was no shock to me - as it seems to be for the newspaper's writing stories on the subject - as I have done a small amount of research into the amount of children that mental health affects for a blog post I was writing for YoungMinds, which showed that 1 in 3 pupils in a classroom have a mental health issue. The charity YoungMinds had a campaign going which was trying to get the attention of the government and people in power, to suggest that lessons need to be had on this subject however unfortunately, they ran out of funding and so it came to a halt. I hope that this research found and the launch of the MindFull website will not only help other people but also bring everyone to realise that actually if every individual was educated on mental health, not as many would suffer in silence and it would be a lot easier to talk openly about.
Here are a couple of online newspaper articles on the topic:
Please share this blog post if you are able to! I would be incredibly happy to find out that school's were changing their approach to mental health and I just hope that this shocking discovery will cause them to take action somehow. Perhaps even a petition would be a good idea? Also, if you have suffered in the past, or even present, please share your story in some way as it really could help and even if it helps just one person it surely is worth doing.
Here is the new MindFull website : http://www.mindfull.org/
Thank you for reading x
